Artist Story
Calvin Coleman was born in Hampton, Virginia and raised in Swarthmore, PA. He graduated from Lincoln University with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education, then taught elementary school for 14 years before making a full-time leap to art in 2004. A self-taught artist working in acrylic, oil, watercolor, charcoal, and his distinctive collage technique — combining fabric, textured paper, and heavy-body acrylic paint — Coleman is influenced by Richard Mayhew and Chaim Soutine. His paintings, described as having ‘an aura of originality and poetic whimsy,’ explore spirituality, nature, and the universal human journey. His art has been commissioned by the State of Maryland, Lincoln University, Verizon Wireless, and Global Hue. He is also a published author: *Coleman: His Art Story*. His shop sells originals on canvas, originals on paper, and hand-pulled prints.
