Welcome to First & King

Some of the best ideas don't arrive fully formed. They show up quietly, in a moment, a memory, a feeling you can't quite name at the time. For First & King, that moment happened in a barbershop nearly 20 years ago.

It was a regular Saturday afternoon. The chairs were full, barbers moderated debates, and the conversations were loud. A continuous flow of folks streamed through the shop selling whatever you needed - music, clothes, movies, art - all hustling to make something out of nothing.

When I think about that barbershop, I realized it was more than a place to get a haircut. It was community. It was culture. Both working hard to make it in a society that offers more contempt than grace or compassion for the Black community.

This struck me like nothing I had ever felt and that feeling demanded I do something. Do something within my ability to help Black creators flourish and succeed. And the idea of First & King was born.

First & King is a reimagining of the hustle from that barbershop. A digital block that promotes Black creators redefining fashion, culture, and beauty.

First & King will focus on three curated sections, each one a window into a different dimension of Black creativity and commerce:

Style & Grace — Black-owned fashion brands redefining style on their own terms. From streetwear to elevated essentials, these are the designers and labels setting the tone.

Art & Soul — A celebration of Black visual art and the artists behind it. Original works, prints, and the stories of the creative minds shaping culture one piece at a time.

So Fresh & So Clean — Black-owned beauty brands built for the community. From skincare to haircare to makeup, these are the brands dedicated to addressing the specific needs of melanated skin.
